Also, I would think of a "spring pin" before a "cotter pin" if you asked for a "split pin." (Run a google image search for SPRING PIN, COTTER PIN, and SPLIT PIN, see what pops up.) Based on that google search, I would say that a "split pin" and a "cotter pin" are supposed to be identical. My two cents. or pence. or whatever.
