The monastery's full formal name is Thegchog Namdrol Shedrub Dargyeling, but it's called "Namdrolling or Namdroling" for short. Its initial structure was a temple constructed from bamboo , covering an area of approximately 80 square feet (7.4 m 2 ) and its founder Penor Rinpoche lived in a tent.

English: The Namdroling Nyingmapa Monastery (or Thekchog Namdrol Shedrub Dargye Ling) is the largest teaching center of Nyingmapa – a lineage of Tibetan Buddhism – in the world. This picture is of The Tibetan Golden Temple which is located half way to Madikeri at Koppa. The Dalai Lama inaugurated the Buddhist Vihara in September 1999.
Most notable among them are the large educational monastic institution Sera, the smaller Tashilunpo monastery (both in the Gelukpa tradition), and the Namdroling monastery (in the Nyingma tradition). Particularly well known among the temples is the Golden Temple, which is also a major tourist spot in the area.
The leadership at Namdroling Monastery also oversees a junior school, the Yeshe Wosel Sherab Reltri Ling (ye shes 'od gsal shes rab ral gri gling), while in 1975 a residence for elderly people, the Geso Khang (rgas gso khang) was also built. The community hospital was built in 2003.
The Ngagyur Nyingma Institute (Tib: སྔ་འགྱུར་མཐོ་སློབ་མདོ་སྔགས་རིག་པའི་འབྱུང་གནས་གླིང་།, Wylie: snga 'gyur mtho slob mdo sngags rig pa'i 'byung gnas gling) of Namdroling Monastery was established by Penor Rinpoche in 1978.

In order to give equal opportunity to women in the study and practice of Dharma, Drubwang Padma Norbu Rinpoche established the nunnery in 1993, which is situated at a distance of one kilometer from Namdroling Monastery. There are 1397 nuns who have enrolled in this nunnery so far, of which more than 681 are currently resident.
