Wailagi Lala (pronounced [waiˈlaŋi ˈlala]) is the northernmost outpost of Fiji's Lau Islands. This tiny atoll, with an area of just 30 hectares (74 acres) and rising no more than 3 metres (10 ft) above mean sea level, is situated at 16.45° South and 179.6° West. It is the only true atoll in Fiji.
The island has an area of 4.45 square kilometres (445.00 hectares; 1,099.62 acres) and rises to more than 50 metres (160 feet) above sea level. It is composed wholly of limestone (Koroqara Limestone, Tokalau Limestone Group), probably Late Miocene in age. A single village has a population around 300.
Fiji is located on the northeast corner of the Indo-Australian plate near where it subducts under the Pacific plate on the North Fiji Basin microplate between the North Fiji Fracture Zone on the north and the Hunter fracture zone on the south. Beachcomber Island is a private island within the Mamanuca Islands of Fiji in the South Pacific, [2] which in turn are a part of Fiji's Western Division. Being one of the closest islands to Denarau, it has been a key tourism icon of the South Pacific since it’s development.
The Fiji Village news service reported on 28 March 2006 that the World Wide Fund for Nature had donated thirteen 5000-gallon water tanks to Kabara, which would likely eliminate water shortages on the island. Kabara was the first site promoted under the Climate Witness Programme in the Pacific. [1]
It reaches 256 metres (840 ft) above sea level at Mount Suelhof, near the center of the island. Satarua Peak, 166 metres (540 ft) high, lies near the eastern end of the island. [9] While they are very secluded from much of Fiji proper, the large reef and untouched beaches are renowned as some of the most beautiful in the Republic of Fiji.
