Fourplay (stylized as fOURPLAY) is a contemporary American smooth jazz quartet. The original members of the group were Bob James (keyboards), Lee Ritenour (guitars), Nathan East (bass), and Harvey Mason (drums). [1] In 1997, Lee Ritenour left the group and Fourplay chose Larry Carlton as his replacement.

Fourplay is the debut album by the American smooth jazz group Fourplay released in 1991 on Warner Bros. records. The album went to number 1 [2] on the Contemporary Jazz charts, number 16 [3] on the R&B charts and number 97 [4] on the US Billboard 200. As an album, Fourplay has also been certified Gold in the US by the RIAA. [5]
Carlton was born in Torrance, California, United States, [1] and at the age of six began guitar lessons. In the early 1960s, while he was still in high school, he debuted his talent playing Surf Guitar with Eddie and the Showmen, who became the house band at the Retail Clerks Union Hall in Buena Park, Ca.

He founded the band Fourplay and wrote "Angela", the theme song for the TV show Taxi. [2] According to VICE, music from his first seven albums has often been sampled and believed to have contributed to the formation of hip hop.
Harvey William Mason (born February 22, 1947) [1] is an American jazz drummer, record producer, and member of the band Fourplay. He was the original drummer for Herbie Hancock’s band The Headhunters.
