John Robert Fowles (/ f aʊ l z /; 31 March 1926 – 5 November 2005) was an English novelist, critically positioned between modernism and postmodernism. His work was influenced by Jean-Paul Sartre and Albert Camus , among others.

Considered an example of metafiction, it was the first novel written by Fowles but his second novel to be published. A revised edition was published in 1977. [1] In 1999, The Magus was ranked on both lists of Modern Library 100 Best Novels, reaching number 93 on the editors' list and number 71 on the readers' list. [2]
A list of the ten best graphic novels of the period was subsequently published as a supplement to the list. [3] Watchmen (1986) by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons appears on both the 100 Best Novels and 10 Best Graphic Novels lists, giving the combined lists a total of 109 entries.
