New Balance 99X Series is a series of athletic shoes produced by New Balance since the introduction of the first New Balance 990 in 1982. The shoes have been updated sporadically since the original 990, all models have used the 99X numbering format, and some model numbers have been reused throughout the years.
The popularity of 2000s era running shoes in the early 2020s helped motivate New Balance to re-release the 1906 in 2022. Similar to the relaunch of the New Balance 2002, the sole of the shoe was replaced with that of the New Balance 860v2 and given the name 1906R. A coincidence as the 1906 served as a design inspiration for the 2002. [4]
The company later did business under the name New Balance Athletic Shoe Company. As New Balance slowly established itself as a niche business in the 1930s, baseball players and track and field athletes sought the company out for its specialty footwear. [6] In 1956, Hall sold the business to his daughter Eleanor and her husband Paul Kidd. [7]
