Following an announcement on June 13, 1991, by the International Softball Federation that women's fastpitch was being made a full-medal sport at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, the Canada Cup was created to provide the Canadian national softball team with a world calibre team competition in order to help prepare for Olympic qualifying.
The Canada men's national softball team participated in the 1988 World Championships held in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. The team played 13 games in the round robin round. Canada beat Australia 7–4 in one game in this round.
The team won bronze at the 2020 Summer Olympics, in Tokyo; this was the fifth Olympics to include softball (no softball in 2012 nor 2016). The team won gold at the 1983 Pan American Games in Caracas and the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto. The team won bronze at the 2018 World Championship.

Phyllis "Yogi" Bomberry (1943 - January 3, 2019) was a Canadian softball catcher from southwestern Ontario. [1] She competed nationally winning many Canadian Women's Softball Championships. Bomberry became the first female to win the Tom Longboat Award. [1] She died on January 3, 2019. [2]
In softball, Marin was the only player from Quebec to qualify for the 2008 Olympic softball roster. [1] She played in three Canadian softball championships with the Québec Rebelles. In 2001 and 2002, she won the Canadian championships MVP award. Marin was part of the silver medal-winning squad at the 2007 Pan-American games in Rio de Janeiro.
