A gear case, also known as a chain case or chainguard, is an enclosure for the bicycle chain and sprocket assemblages commonly employed by utility bicycles. It serves to protect the cyclist from being soiled or trapped in the chain rings and tends to fully enclose the drive train. It may also contain an oil bath to keep the chain lubricated.
The mechanism has a rocker arm [5] [6] on each side of the bike that replaces the round sprockets (which are usually only on the right side) on chain driven bikes. In contrast to traditional derailleur chain drives, the drive does not slip when changing gears, [7] and the gearing can be changed even when the bicycle is almost stationary.
