The Sterling athletic teams are called the Warriors. The college is a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), primarily competing in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) since the 1958–59 academic year; which they were a member on a previous stint from 1902–03 to December 1928 (of the 1928–29 school year).
The Kansas Board of Regents governs six state universities and supervises and coordinates 19 community colleges, five technical colleges, six technical schools and a municipal university. The Board also authorizes private and out-of-state institutions to operate in Kansas with a Certificate of Approval renewed annually.

Curtis Eugene Bennett (December 16, 1935 – January 26, 2011) was an American football coach. He served as the head football coach at Sterling College in Sterling, Kansas for 13 seasons over three stints, compiling a record of 59–60–3 His first tenure was from 1966 until the end of the 1973 season.
