The valley contains a series of neighborhoods, comprising the largest populated place within the corporate limits of the City and Borough of Juneau, Alaska's capital. The valley was formed by Mendenhall Glacier over the course of roughly three thousand years. It was named for the American physicist and meteorologist Thomas Corwin Mendenhall.
Mount Roberts or Roberts Peak (Tlingit: Wooshkeenax̱ Deiyí) is a 3,819 foot (1,164 m) mountain just east of downtown Juneau, Alaska.It is noted for its accessibility from downtown Juneau and for the Goldbelt Tram which carries passengers and tourists from sea level to 1,800 feet (550 m) up the mountain.
This area was the center of Juneau's economic activity from its founding in 1880 as a gold mining camp, through its growth into an urbanized area in the early 20th century, including its eventual designation as the territorial capital in 1906.
