Petco Health and Wellness Company, Inc. is an American pet retailer with corporate offices in San Diego and San Antonio. Petco sells pet food, products, and services, as well as certain types of live small animals. Founded in 1965 as a mail-order veterinary supply company in California, it grew into a pet food and supplies chain.
Its original anchor stores were Macy's and Montgomery Ward, which closed in 2001. It was expanded in 1987 with a new wing featuring a food court, Toys "R" Us and a Gottschalks, which remained until the chain filed for bankruptcy in 2009. [3] In 2002, Best Buy opened in part of the vacated Montgomery Ward store. [4] The rest later became Petco.
Pet Supplies Plus was founded in 1988 by Harry Shallop and Jack Berry, in Redford, Michigan. [8] In December 2018, Pet Supplies Plus was acquired by Sentinel Capital Partners. [9] In January 2021, the Franchise Group, Inc., announced it was acquiring Pet Supplies Plus, [10] [11] and the deal was closed on March 10, 2021. [12]

It caters to farmers, ranchers, pet owners, and landowners. As of 2024, the company had 2,250 stores.
