The Caja WHT is located in New Mexico approximately 8 miles west of Santa Fe. The territory consists of 8728 acres of National Forest land in the Caja Plateau. The horse herd is confined to the Caja Plateau by the town of Santa Fe to the east and the Rio Grande River to the west.
Santa Fe National Forest offers a variety of campgrounds. The campgrounds range from highly developed, with RV sites and electrical hook ups, to primitive, with only toilets. High points near Saint Peter’s Dome (which is actually not within the wilderness boundaries) provide sweeping vistas to the Caja del Rio Plateau and Sangre de Cristo Mountains to the east and the Sandia Mountains to the south.
Wild Horse and Burro Territories. The Forest Service manages approximately 7,100 wild horses and 900 wild burros on 53 wild horse and burro territories on approximately 2.5 million acres of National Forest System lands in 5 Forest Service regions, 19 national forests, and 9 states.
Caja Del Rio Wildlife and Cultural Interpretive Management Area . The Caja del Rio lies west of Santa Fe bounded on the west by the White Rock to Cochiti Canyon of the Rio Grande. Not conforming to the typical notion of Forest land, the Caja contains abundant cultural and biological resources.
The Twin Hills Prescribed Burn is located west of Santa Fe in the Caja Del Rio Plateau, approximately 8 miles northwest of the Santa Fe Municipal Airport. The burn will benefit the plateau’s grasslands by reducing encroachment of piñon/juniper and stimulating grass growth.

San Pedro Parks Wilderness is easily accessed through the San Gregorio Lake Trailhead, and the district also provides access to the Continental Divide Scenic Trail. The Rio De Las Vacas and Clear Creek Campgrounds provide visitors with scenic views of the surrounding mountains.
