The Inspectional Services Department (ISD) is a regulatory agency comprised of five field divisions whose aim is to protect and improve the quality of life for all Boston residents by effectively administering and enforcing building, housing, health, sanitary and safety regulations mandated by City and State governments.
The Inspectional Services permit process is based on whether you're making changes to a structure or to a building’s occupancy. Permitting for minor changes can be done online or in person. Major changes usually can only be started online, and you need to complete them in person.
Our team is responsible for responding to inquiries and facilitating the remediation of City code violations. We serve residents and business owners. We also provide outreach and help facilitate the delivery of City services in Inspectional Services.
Permits for construction projects include building, electrical, plumbing, and gas. When applying for a permit in person, applicants must visit counters 1 and 2 for large projects. Counters are located at 1010 Massachusetts Ave., 5th Floor, Boston, MA 02118 Office hours: Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. - 4 p.m.
