The University of Florida fielded its first official intercollegiate sports team (football) in the fall of 1906. It adopted orange and blue as its official colors, combining the blue and white of the former Florida Agricultural College in Lake City with the orange and black of the former East Florida Seminary in Gainesville, the university's two oldest predecessor institutions.

The university has over 900 buildings on the main campus (about 170 have classrooms). The University of Florida campus encompasses over 2,000 acres (8.1 km 2). The campus is home to many notable structures, including Century Tower, a 157-foot-tall (48 m) carillon tower in the center of the campus historic district.

Gainesville and Lake City competed to be the home of the new university. Gainesville was chosen, and construction on a new campus began just west of town in late 1905. The University of Florida's student enrollment grew from 102 when it opened in Gainesville in 1906 to about 2,000 in 1930 and 10,000 in 1950.

The University of Florida College of the Arts is the fine arts college of the University of Florida. It was established in 1975, and is located on the university's Gainesville, Florida campus. As of 2024 the interim dean was Jennifer Setlow. Previously named the College of Fine Arts, the college's name was changed on May 12, 2014. [2]
