Pettigrew State Park is a North Carolina State Park in Tyrrell and Washington Counties, North Carolina in the United States. It covers 5,951 acres (24.08 km 2) [2] around the shore lines of Lake Phelps and the Scuppernong River. The park's developed facilities are south of U.S. Route 64 near Roper and Creswell, North Carolina.
Lake Phelps is North Carolina's second largest natural lake. It has a surface area of 16,600 acres (67 km 2), [2] and is located primarily in Washington County on the Albemarle-Pamlico Peninsula between the Albemarle Sound and the Pamlico Sound. The easternmost part of the lake extends into Tyrrell County.

The establishment of the Lake Company, founded by Josiah Collins Sr., Nathaniel Allen, and Dr. Samuel Dickenson helped support the region’s development. The company’s acquisition of 100,000 acres between Lake Phelps and the Scuppernong River led to the creation of the Somerset Canal between the two bodies of water completed in 1788.
