The British long jump athletics champions covers four competitions; the current British Athletics Championships which was founded in 2007, [1] the preceding AAA Championships (1880-2006), the Amateur Athletic Club Championships (1866-1879) and finally the UK Athletics Championships which existed from 1977 until 1997 and ran concurrently with the AAA Championships.

The long jump at the World Championships in Athletics has been contested by both men and women since the inaugural edition in 1983. The competition format typically has one qualifying round contested by two groups of athletes, with all those clearing the qualifying height or placing in top twelve advancing to the final round.
Frederick Carlton Lewis (born July 1, 1961) is an American former track and field athlete who won nine Olympic gold medals, one Olympic silver medal, and 10 World Championships medals, including eight gold. Lewis was a dominant sprinter and long jumper whose career spanned from 1979 to 1996, when he last won the Olympic long jump.
He ended that year with a long jump best of 7.65 m (25 ft 1 in) as well as a triple jump of 15.54 m (50 ft 11 + 3 ⁄ 4 in). [5] A breakthrough came the year after when he jumped 8.19 m (26 ft 10 + 1 ⁄ 4 in) to win at the Weltklasse in Biberach in Germany. [6] This jump was in the top ten all-time by an under-20 athlete at that point. [7]
