Naim Audio is a specialist British manufacturer of high-end audio amplifiers well known for their self described qualities of "pace, rhythm and timing". [ 1 ] [ 2 ] The company has a sui generis approach to audio design, ignoring specifications and power ratings as indicators of the quality of an amplifier.
The first product Naim put on the market was the NAP160 power amplifier; it was followed by the NAC12 pre-amplifier. [1] The two-channel NAP 250 amplifier, launched in 1975, is perhaps Naim Audio's most well-known analogue product, as its basic circuit layout was shared by all the company's power amplifiers until the introduction of the NAP500 in 2000.
[2] [6] The Naim Audio Integrated amplifier (or NAIT) was created by Julian Vereker as a minimalist black shoe-box design that includes a phono and two line-level inputs – one for tuner and one for tape recorder. [7] The phono input, for moving magnet cartridges, is derived from the NAC 32 pre-amplifier. [2]
The first Naim Audio amplifier was sold in December 1971 – a power amplifier only made initially on demand for friends and acquaintances. [2] [1] In 1973 Vereker won a contract to supply the nascent Capital Radio with 24 single cabinets containing the Naim amplifier and speaker drive units. [2]

During much of the 1970s and 1980s, Linn adopted a tight working relationship with Naim Audio. It all started in about 1974 when Linn was looking for suitable amplifiers to drive their Isobarik loudspeaker and came across Vereker's NAP 200. [18] Their product ranges were complementary, and their names were often mentioned together.
