The Speer Family was a Southern gospel family musical group. It was founded in 1921 by George Thomas ("Dad") Speer (1891–1966), his wife, Lena Darling ("Mom") Speer (née Brock; 1899–1967), and his sister and brother-in-law, Pearl Claborn (1902–1979) and Logan Claborn (William Logan Claborn; 1896–1981). Downing released her latest album Step By Step in 2021, it features a collection of songs most of which were co-written by Downing. In 1998, Downing was inducted into the Gospel Music Association Hall Of Fame as part of the Speer Family. In 2018, Downing was inducted into the Southern Gospel Music Association Hall of Fame. [7]
Brock Speer (December 28, 1920 – March 29, 1999) [1] sang bass for the Speer Family Southern Gospel musical group and was a leader in Southern Gospel music.. One might say that Southern Gospel music was Speer's life.
From starting to sing at age 2, Speer went on to a career that led to his being described on the Gospel Music Association Hall of Fame website as "one of the most enduring and outstanding lead singers and piano performers in gospel music." [3] During his years with the Speer Family, the group recorded more than 75 albums. [3]
Dodge began her career in southern gospel music in 1969 when, at age 19, she joined The Downings. [4] After 18 months with that group, she began singing with the Speer Family. During Dodge's early days with the Speers, she lived with them and considered them family. Years later, she said, "Brock Speer was like a daddy to me."

It was inducted into the Gospel Music Association’s Hall of Fame in 2016, and nominated for a best Southern Gospel album Grammy for the record Let The Redeemed Say So in 1990.
