Hagerstown Regional Airport is 15 minutes by car from downtown Hagerstown, and it is located directly off Interstate 81 and U.S. Route 11. Interstate 70 is 5 miles (8.0 km) south of the airport and the airport is accessible via Interstate 81. Parking at the airport is free.
In the 1950s a small airport was built on land leased from Penn State, just north of State College. The Centre County Airport Authority was created to manage the development of the airport. The October 1959 chartshows 2350-foot runway 6; the August 1965 chart shows 3000 feet; the November 1967 chart adds 2350-foot runway 16.
Due to airport activity and nearby housing development, the airport moved to its current location in 1964. The new airport opened with a single 3,700-by-100-foot (1,128 m × 30 m) paved runway. In 1992, the city purchased a control tower from Centennial Airport near Denver and reassembled it at Manassas Regional Airport.
