Des Moines Area Community College was created on March 18, 1966. [3] The first classes were held on the Ankeny [4] Campus in 1968. DMACC has experienced tremendous growth in the last two decades. In the fall of 2000, 10,803 students were enrolled at DMACC. By the fall of 2011, that number grew to 25,425.
Students are offered scheduled bus routes to and from Central Campus and their high school. Students can participate in classes such as aviation, culinary, anatomy, marine biology, broadcasting and many more. [3] The school also offers many college credit courses from nearby DMACC, free of charge to students. [4]
The University of Iowa has a satellite facility in the city's Western Gateway Park, while Iowa State University hosts Master of Business Administration classes downtown. Des Moines Area Community College is the area's community college with campuses in Ankeny, Des Moines, and West Des Moines.

Indianola Male and Female Seminary was opened on September 24, 1860, and the name was changed to the Des Moines Conference Seminary in September 1865. On September 21, 1867, the school was upgraded to a college and renamed Simpson Centenary College to honor Methodism's most renowned living bishop, Bishop Matthew Simpson (1811-1884), and to celebrate the centennial of American Methodism.
