Magdalen College (/ ˈ m ɔː d l ɪ n / MAWD-lin) [4] is a constituent college of the University of Oxford. [5] It was founded in 1458 by Bishop of Winchester William of Waynflete. [6] It is one of the wealthiest Oxford colleges, as of 2022, [3] and one of the strongest academically, setting the record for the highest Norrington Score in 2010 and topping the table twice since then. Magdalen Tower is one of the oldest parts of Magdalen College, Oxford, situated directly in the High Street.Built of stone from 1492, when the foundation stone was laid, [1] its bells hung ready for use in 1505, and completed by 1509, it is an important element of the Oxford skyline.
He was educated at Rugby School and Magdalen College, Oxford, where he matriculated on 27 July 1826, and was elected to a demyship. In 1830 he obtained the chancellor's prize with a Latin poem, "Tyrus", and a first-class in the classical schools. In 1831 he graduated BA and in 1832 was ordained as a deacon and received a Magdalen fellowship.
