I have played primarily a 6-string since about 1995 and never used learning material designed for a 5- or 6-string bass. Most of the material I learned from was actually designed for string bass rather than electric bass. So don't hesitate to take advantage of the wealth of 4-string material that is available.

For 24 fret bass, I will check the fret level from the fret on top of first neck screw to 24th fret first. If the fret are flat evenly, I set the neck relief .010-.012 (4 string bass ) or .010-.015 (5 string bass ) on 8th fret which press on 1st fret and the fret on the top of first neck join screw. There was always something feeling a bit "odd" on this bass, and it mostly was the tension of the strings. Yamaha addressed the string angle when going through the body on their new BB pros, drilling holes at 45 degrees, but AFAIK all Fenders have the strings perpendicular to the bridge, resulting in a drastic bend and more tension.
