The district municipalities are labelled with numbers that correspond to their district code, while the metropolitan municipalities are labelled with letters that correspond to their names. The Free State province of South Africa is divided, for local government purposes, into one metropolitan municipality and four district municipalities.The district municipalities are in turn divided into eighteen local municipalities.
The district municipalities are labelled with their code, excluding the letters "DC"; for example, Xhariep District Municipality, which has code DC16, is labelled with a 16.
