North Carolina Highway 42 (NC 42) is a primary state highway in the U.S. state of North Carolina and a semi-urban traffic artery connecting Asheboro, Sanford, Clayton, Wilson and Ahoskie as well as many small- to medium-sized towns throughout Central and Eastern North Carolina.
Future I-73 and I-74 (US 220) northbound near Asheboro in 2006; signs were removed when the freeway was designated I-73/I-74 in 2012. Authorized by the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act of 1991 (ISTEA), I-73 was established as a north–south high-priority corridor from Charleston, South Carolina, to Detroit, Michigan.
North Carolina Highway 49A (NC 49A) was established after mainline NC 49 was rerouted onto US 64 from Asheboro to Ramseur, then northeast to Liberty; NC 49A continued the old alignment through Asheboro via Albemarle Avenue, Park Street, Salisbury Street, and Fayetteville Street. North of Asheboro it followed Old Liberty Road to Liberty.

The highways enter rural Montgomery County after crossing over the Pee Dee River at Lake Tillery. NC 73 leaves NC 24 and NC 27 just east of the county line. While the latter two routes pass through Uwharrie National Forest, NC 73 bypasses it to the south, following a southeasterly routing through the community of Pee Dee to the town of Mount Gilead
NC 62 was an original state highway; starting from Asheboro (then NC 70, currently US 221 Business), going northeast through Liberty and Graham, and ending in Yanceyville (then NC 14, currently Main Street). In 1928, the route was extended from Asheboro to New London, and again in 1930 from Yanceyville to Milton.
