Most of the area was expropriated in the 1950s to make way for Toronto's new city hall. Construction began in 1961, and the building was completed four years later. The time capsule for City Hall was placed in a large ceremony on November 7, 1962 and Governor General Georges Vanier officially opened the new structure September 13, 1965. [8]
