The great Nimes Aqueduct, many of whose remains can be seen today outside of the city, was built to bring water from the hills to the north. Where it crossed the river Gard between Uzès and Remoulins, the spectacular Pont du Gard was built. This is 20 km (12 mi) north east of the city.

This type of sanctuary is quite rare, especially since contrary to what one might imagine, it was not ordered by Augustus, but was probably built by the local populations in a show of gratitude for the favors granted to the city. Built around 100 AD, shortly after the Colosseum of Rome, it is one of the best-preserved Roman amphitheatres in the world.
