Toblerone (/ ˈ t oʊ b l ər oʊ n / ⓘ TOH-blər-ohn, German: [tobləˈroːnə]) is a Swiss chocolate brand [1] owned by Mondelez International (originally Kraft Foods). It is produced in Bern , Switzerland, [ 2 ] and Bratislava, Slovakia. [ 3 ]
Toblerone chocolate packaging will no longer feature Switzerland’s iconic Matterhorn mountain, as its U.S. owner Mondelez moves some production to Slovakia later this year.
Toblerone is changing its chocolate bar's iconic Matterhorn logo and removing references to being Swiss-made as it moves to comply with new "Swissness" laws.
The name Matterhorn derives from the German words Matte ("meadow") and Horn ("horn"), [6] and is often translated as "the peak of the meadows". [2]In the Schalbetter map, printed by Sebastian Münster in 1545, the valley is labelled Mattertal, but the mountain has the Latin name Mons Silvius as well as the German name Augstalberg, in concord with the Aosta Valley (German Augstal).
In 1908, Tobler and his cousin Emil Baumann, the company's production manager, created the Toblerone chocolate bar, [3] naming the product as a portmanteau combining Tobler's surname and torrone, the Italian word for honey and almond nougat. [3] Tobler applied for a patent for the Toblerone manufacturing process in Bern in 1909. [6]
