The Commander of the Rising Volt Tacklers who is a Pokémon Professor. His partner Pokémon are a Pikachu nicknamed Captain Pikachu that captains the group's airship, the Brave Olivine, and a Charizard. Friede used to be a Pokémon Researcher at Exceed, but lost interest and mostly hung out on Ludlow's boat.
When they finally find Pikachu and Celebi, the reunion is short-lived as Team Rocket attacks, wanting to capture Celebi for themselves! After a short battle and a successful Volt Tackle from Pikachu, the group defeats Team Rocket but their robot causes another fire. Celebi again stops the fire and then returns to its own time.
But Tapu Koko manages to overpower Naganadel, so Ash turns to Pikachu, his last Pokémon standing! Tapu Koko raises the stakes as it and Professor Kukui unleash a legendary Z-Move reserved for Island Guardians, but Ash and Pikachu rise to the challenge with their own Z-Move: 10,000,000 Volt Thunderbolt!

Soon after, Tapu Koko appears and battles Ash and Pikachu in order to test their ability to use the Z-Ring. Ash and Pikachu manage to unleash the Z-Move "Gigavolt Havoc", but the Z-Crystal shatters after Pikachu's immense release of power. In order to regain the power of Z-Moves, Ash decides to undergo the island challenge.

Pikachu shocks Spearow, and in the process alerts a whole flock. The angered Spearow flock gives chase and attacks Pikachu. Ash quickly grabs Pikachu and dives to a waterfall in order to escape from the flock, and the two are fished out down river by a young girl, who tells Ash to take the injured Pikachu to the Pokémon Center in Viridian City.
