The Episcopal Diocese of Olympia, also known as the Episcopal Church in Western Washington, is a diocese of the Episcopal Church in Washington state west of the Cascade Range. It is one of 17 dioceses and an area mission that make up Province 8. The diocese started as a missionary district in 1853 and was formally established in 1910. [1]

On February 11, 1989, Warner was elected coadjutor bishop of Olympia on the first ballot during a special convention held at St. Mark's Cathedral. He was then consecrated on July 8, 1989 at the Climate Center Arena by Bishop Robert H. Cochrane of Olympia. [3] He succeeded as diocesan bishop on January 1, 1990 and was enthroned on May 19, 1990.
The cathedral's dean, Robert V. Taylor, resigned abruptly in March 2008, stating that he and the vestry (church board) diverged in their visions for the future of St. Mark's and there was a loss of trust between them. [2] After several years of transitional ministry, Taylor was succeeded by Steven Lynn Thomason in the summer of 2012. [3]
