Pixel art [note 1] is a form of digital art drawn with graphical software where images are built using pixels as the only building block. [2] It is widely associated with the low-resolution graphics from 8-bit and 16-bit era computers, arcade machines and video game consoles, in addition to other limited systems such as LED displays and graphing calculators, which have a limited number of ...
Pixel art scaling algorithms employ methods significantly different than the common methods of image rescaling, which have the goal of preserving the appearance of images. As pixel art graphics are commonly used at very low resolutions, they employ careful coloring of individual pixels. This results in graphics that rely on a high amount of ...

[5] Most [13] pixel-based image editors work using the RGB color model, but some also allow the use of other color models such as the CMYK color model. [14]
Vexel is a neologism for an entirely pixel-based form of raster art that imitates the visual appearance of vector graphics technique (i.e. sharp-edged lines and areas of flat colour or smooth gradient fills). The word itself is a portmanteau derived from a combination of "vector" and "pixel." [1]
The most promising found was "Pixel art for game developers" by Daniel Silber, which I have now ordered. The Scaling section had zero references and I personally think that a technical explanation of how nearest-neighbor interpolation algorithm works is pretty irrelevant to the average person trying to understand pixel art.
