11 Diagonal Street is an iconic office tower in downtown Johannesburg, South Africa, that was built by Anglo American Property Services. [2] The 22 floor building is the 15th tallest in the city [3] and it was conceptualized in 1981 and excavations began in December that year. Construction ended in 1983 and the building was tenanted in 1984. [4]
The first Carlton Hotel was located two blocks away, at the corner of Eloff Street & Commissioner Street. Conceived in 1895 by mining magnate Barney Barnato as a huge, world-class luxury hotel with a theater, construction was finally begun by Barnato's heirs in 1903, without the theater, after delays caused by Barnato's death and the Boer War.
