George Zabelka was born in St. John's, Michigan on May 8, 1915. His parents, John J. (1883–1957) and Katarina (Zolek, 1874–1940) Zabelka, were Moravian Catholics who immigrated to the United States before the First World War, from Austria-Hungary where his father had served in the army.
