Capital Health was a public health authority providing complete health services to Edmonton, Alberta's capital city, and its surrounding communities. It was also the largest single employer in the province of Alberta, employing approximately 30,000 people. [1] In 2008, it was merged into Alberta Health Services.
Alberta Health Services has been organized so as to separate acute hospital facilities (with separate reporting lines for major tertiary, metropolitan and regional hospitals) from smaller hospitals and community services, the latter of which are organized into five zones (North, Edmonton, Central, Calgary and South).
The board has been chaired by former Alberta premier Ed Stelmach since 2016. [5] According to Covenant Health, it is one of the largest Catholic health care providers in Canada, [6] employing over 11,000 staff, physicians and volunteers in 16 facilities in 11 communities across Alberta in cooperation with Alberta Health Services.
