The Finswimming World Championships is the peak international event for the underwater sport of finswimming. These are conducted on behalf of the sport's governing body, Confédération Mondiale des Activités Subaquatiques (CMAS) by an affiliated national federation.

As of January 2013, CMAS recognises world and other records for the following techniques and distances for both males and females in the age groups of Senior (i.e. 18 years and older) and Junior (i.e. 12 to 17 years old) where these are made in an Olympic-size swimming pool (i.e. 50m length) and are measured by electronic automatic officiating equipment:
The first World Championships were held in Hanover, Germany during 1976 followed by the inclusion of the sport in the inaugural World Games in Santa Clara, California, USA during 1981. In 1988, the first World Long Distance Championship was held in Paris, France followed in 1989 by the first World Junior Championship in Dunaújváros, Hungary.
