The Phyllostomidae, also known as New World leaf-nosed bats, are among the most ecologically diverse mammal families. [6] This variation is measured by diversity in skull morphology and diet-related characteristics: Phyllostomidae consists of species that have evolved physical modifications for insectivory, frugivory, hematophagy, nectarivory, and omnivory.
They range in size from the Malayan tailless leaf-nosed bat, at 3 cm (1 in) and no tail, to the striped leaf-nosed bat, at 13 cm (5 in) plus a 4 cm (2 in) tail. Like all bats, hipposiderids are capable of true and sustained flight , and have wing lengths ranging from multiple species with 3 cm (1 in), to the giant roundleaf bat at 13 cm (5 in).
The northern leaf-nosed bat (Hipposideros stenotis) is a micro-bat of the family Hipposideridae, known as "leaf-nosed" bats. The species is endemic to northern regions of Australia . They are highly manoeuvrable in flight, and use echolocation to forage for insect prey.
Hipposideros is one of the most diverse genera of bats, with more than 70 species.They are collectively called roundleaf bats after the shape of their nasal ornament. It is the type genus of the family Hipposideridae.
A common name for what Gray referred as 'leaf-nosed bats' in establishing the Rhinonycterina, and later authors labelled 'Old World leaf-nosed bats' in transposing the name for hipposiderid species, has been proposed as trident bats (Armstrong, et al, 2016).
The transverse leaf is erect and there is no median projection. [4] They have huge ears mainly because of the well developed antitragus, while no tragus is present. [ 5 ] Males have a sac located posterior to the nose which can secrete a waxy substance, thought to be used in attracting mates and status determination.
