In the CMYK model, it is the opposite: white is the natural color of the paper or other background, and black results from a full combination of colored inks. To save cost on ink, and to produce deeper black tones, unsaturated and dark colors are produced by using black ink instead of or in addition to combinations of cyan, magenta, and yellow.
English: Three examples of color halftoning with CMYK separations. From left to right: The cyan separation, the magenta separation, the yellow separation, the black separation, the combined halftone pattern and finally how the human eye would observe the combined halftone pattern from a sufficient distance.
[1] [2] They were intended to predict the color produced by a combination of halftones printed in cyan, magenta, and yellow inks. The equations estimate the reflectance (in CIE XYZ coordinates or as a function of wavelength) as a function of the reflectance of the 8 possible combinations of CMY inks (or the 16 combinations of CMYK inks ...
Column 13 to 16: CMYK-Colors Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Key in different steps of brightness; Column 17 to 19: RGB-Colors Red, Green, and Blue in different steps of brightness; Column 20 to 22: undefined, producers' choice; After scanning such a target, an ICC profile gets calculated on the basis of reference values. This profile is used for ...
New version with cyan, magenta and yellow in CMYK color space (previous version uses the RGB cyan, ie with the 00FFFF hex code, magenta and yellow). Uses also the "multiply" blend mode. 19:12, 18 March 2013: 512 × 384 (5 KB) Cmglee: Rotate labels. 20:36, 8 January 2013: 512 × 455 (5 KB) Cmglee

The CMYK model adds a black primary to improve the darkness of blacks, where the CMY model can only mix to dark gray or only achieves black inefficiently, i.e. by using lots of the primary pigments. In the CMY model, an equal mixture of cyan and magenta is blue , an equal mixture of magenta and yellow is red and an equal mixture of yellow and ...
A method of full-color printing is six-color process printing (for example, Pantone's Hexachrome system) which adds orange and green to the traditional CMYK inks for a larger and more vibrant gamut, or color range. However, such alternate color systems still rely on color separation, halftoning and lithography to produce printed images.
