Two other roads—a Cascade crossing at present State Route 410 and a branch of the first road to Wenatchee—were added in 1897. The Washington Highway Department was established in 1905, and a set of twelve State Roads, numbered from 1 to 12, were assigned. A thirteenth was added in 1907, and State Roads 14 to 18 in 1909.
The highway begins at an intersection with U.S. Route 2 (US 2) and US 97 near East Wenatchee and travels east through Quincy, Ephrata, and Odessa before terminating at US 2 in Davenport. The route follows the Columbia River and the BNSF Railway's Columbia River Subdivision through the largely rural area between Wenatchee and Davenport.
The road connecting Quincy to points south, including Burke and the future settlement of George, appeared on local maps as early as 1910. [14] It was added to the state highway system in 1915 as a section of the Sunset Highway, which continued west through Ellensburg towards Seattle and east through Wenatchee and Waterville towards Spokane.
