The United States Penitentiary, Atwater (USP Atwater) is a high-security United States federal prison for male inmates in unincorporated Merced County, California. [1] The institution also includes a minimum-security satellite camp. It is operated by the Federal Bureau of Prisons, a division of the United States Department of Justice.
The following counties do not have jails: Alpine County: [125] jail services are contracted to El Dorado County and Calaveras County.; Sierra County: [126] this county does not have an official jail tracked by the Board of State and Community Corrections, but the Sheriff's website says that "as of March 17, 2015 the Sierra County Jail began operating as a Temporary Housing Facility".
Merced County was partitioned from Mariposa County in 1855. [2]In May 1855, John W. Fitzhugh was elected the first County Judge. The county seat was established on Mariposa Creek, approximately 8 mi (13 km) from the present-day site of Merced, on the ranch of Turner & Osborne and court was held in a one-story wooden building with a footprint of approximately 12 ft × 25 ft (3.7 m × 7.6 m).
