First Baptist Church was founded in 1845 as the Rose of Sharon Baptist Church, the first church in Durham, North Carolina. [1] They held services at Piney Grove schoolhouse located one mile south of West Durham. [1] The congregation moved to Pettigrew Street in 1850. [1]
Completed (with two stories) in 1862 on Halifax St., the building was home to one of the earliest North Carolina railroads, the Raleigh & Gaston, eventually incorporated into the 20th century's Seaboard Coast Line. Acquired by the state in the 1970s for use as an office building and moved to its present location on N. Salisbury St.

She attended, and began singing in, Piney Grove Baptist Church, [2] and graduated from Carver High School in Carrollton. [4] [5] By the mid-1960s she was a member of the Gospel Crusaders of Los Angeles. [6] In 1968, she started singing at the Club 400 in Atlanta, and joined Clarence Carter's band as a back-up singer.
