The Island is 6 miles (10 km) long, and 3 miles (5 km) wide and has 27 miles (43 km) of coastline. The Gilgo Beach serial killings were part of a series of murders spanning from the early 1990s until 2011. Many of the victims' remains were found over a period of months in 2010 and 2011 during a police search of the area along Ocean Parkway, a road near the remote beach town of Gilgo on Long Island in Suffolk County, New York.
It serves as a connecting route between central Long Island and the Hamptons. The road is known as Captain Daniel Roe Highway, for Captain Daniel Roe (1740–1820) of Selden, who served in the French and Indian War and was a captain in the Revolutionary War. [3] Within Manorville, the road is also known as Eastport Manor Road.

When CR 111 was built between the Long Island Expressway and Sunrise Highway during the 1970s, it replaced Eastport–Manorville Road north of the road's current terminus towards the L.I.E. However, Suffolk County Planning Department wanted to build a new extension of CR 55 north of CR 111 leading to the Grumman Calverton Airport.
