The worm has 21 segments and 16 of them bear chaetae (the bristled setae of polychaetes). The face is somewhat flattened. The body is cylindrical, but tapers slightly toward the posterior end. In life, the worm is transparent, with ring-shaped integument (scaly ridges) along the back, and discontinuous brown stripe markings.
Gongylonema pulchrum was first named and presented with its own species by Molin in 1857. Chaoborus is a genus of midges in the family Chaoboridae.The larvae are known as glassworms because they are transparent.They can be found commonly in lakes all over the world and can be up to 2 cm (0.8 in).
It has around 120–170 segments, often 135–150. The body is cylindrical in the cross section, except for the broad, flattened posterior section. Head end dark brown to reddish brown lateral, dorsal pigmentation fading towards the back. [1] The worm has a hydrostatic skeleton and moves by longitudinal and circular muscular contractions.
When it first digs its burrow the lugworm softens the sand in its head shaft by pushing its head up into it with a piston action. After that the sand is kept loose by a current of water driven through the burrow from the hind end by the waves of contraction passing along the worm's body.
