Despite its name, it is not a university (a status that can only be conferred by the government under certain conditions to larger institutions), but a state-owned enterprise involved in research and some university-level education.

In 2007 there were 230 pupils; they consisted of mainly Norwegians, but also pupils from 12 other countries, including around 10 Thai students. Generally, none of the students are born in Svalbard. When children reach the age of 16 or 17, most families move to mainland Norway for improved school access.

Adventdalen (English: Advent Valley) [1] [2] [3] is a 30-kilometre (19 mi) valley on the island Spitsbergen in Svalbard, Norway. The river that runs through the valley, Adventdalselva, flows into Adventfjorden just outside Longyearbyen. Adventfjorden is an arm of Isfjorden.
