Volvo Dealer Racing, known originally as the Volvo Dealer Team and occasionally as Volvo 850 Racing, Volvo S40 Racing and Volvo Racing [1] was an Australian motor racing team that debuted in 1994 competing in the Australian Production Car Championship and at the Bathurst 12 Hour before stepping up to the new Australian Super Touring Championship in 1995 and continued racing through to 1999.
The Volvo 850 was introduced in Europe in June 1991, [16] as a 1992 model year car. It was launched with the slogan "A dynamic car with four unique innovations" [17] which referred to the newly developed five cylinder transverse engine, the Delta-link rear axle, [18] the Side Impact Protection System (SIPS), [19] and the self-adjusting seatbelt reel for the front seats.
His first year in the BTCC was 1994, when his car was quite distinctive, driving a Volvo 850 Estate, when it was normal to race saloons. The TWR team switched to a saloon in 1995 and Rydell took pole for 13 of the 24 races, but due to several slow starts he won only 4 times and he finished on podium 7 times.
