Charles Maries. Charles Maries (18 December 1851 – 11 October 1902) was an English botanist and plant collector who was sent by James Veitch & Sons of Chelsea, London to search for new hardy plants in Japan, China and Taiwan between 1877 and 1879; there he discovered over 500 new species, [1] [2] which Veitch introduced to England.
"Snowball" flowers of a sterile cultivar. Growing to 3 m (10 ft) tall, it is a deciduous shrub. The leaves are opposite, 5–10 cm (2–4 in) long and 3–6 cm (1–2 in) broad, simple ovate to oval, with a serrated margin. Plants from Taiwan are sometimes distinguished as Viburnum plicatum var. formosanum Liu & Ou. [3]
Viburnum sieboldii has coarse, open structure, flat-topped flowers, reddish-black fruit, and can grow as a small tree. Viburnum tinus is a widely grown garden and landscape shrub. The cultivars 'Pragense' [ 10 ] and 'Eskimo', [ 11 ] of mixed or uncertain parentage, have won the Royal Horticultural Society 's Award of Garden Merit .
