The show has its roots in a 20-minute segment depicting Curt Gowdy and Joe Brooks fly fishing in the Andes Mountains in Argentina in 1964. The segment appeared on Wide World of Sports and immediately was spun off into its own series airing at 3 PM EST on Sundays January through March on ABC. [2] The show's first episode was on January 31, 1965. [3]
The show reached its 100,000 visitors mark at the 1981 show. [10] [11] The 2010 show included more than 1,000 hunting and fishing related vendors and over 500 outfitters from around the world. In January 2013 the shows promoter Reed Exhibitions announced that semi-automatic rifles would not be on display or for sale. [12]
