Why is the phrase "cotton-picking" used to mean "damned" or "rotten" in the sense of mild profanities? Wiktionary states that it is "Used as a general form of disapproval", and has an example statement from Richard Nixon, yet I can't seem to find any kind of etymology for it anywhere.
