Clerical clothing is non-liturgical clothing worn exclusively by clergy.It is distinct from vestments in that it is not reserved specifically for use in the liturgy.Practices vary: clerical clothing is sometimes worn under vestments, and sometimes as the everyday clothing or street wear of a priest, minister, or other clergy member.
This ordinary wear does not constitute liturgical vestment, but simply acts as a means of identifying the wearer as a member of the clergy or a religious order. A distinction is often made between the type of vestment worn for Holy Eucharist or Holy Communion and that worn for other services.
In the 1960s, many clergy who lived in countries where Catholicism was the dominant religion also began to wear the clerical collar rather than the soutane or cassock. In the Reformed tradition , which stresses preaching as a central concern, pastors often don preaching tabs , which project from their clerical collar. [ 12 ]
In fact, since 1970, the Roman Missal's list of vestments to be used at Mass [6] does not mention the maniple, although it does note another vestment, the amice, which is not always obligatory. [7] When used, the maniple is worn by a priest only when wearing a chasuble for celebrating the Mass.
Priests in monastic and mendicant religious orders that have their own habits (Benedictines, Franciscans, Dominicans, etc.) do not generally wear birettas: in most circumstances, even liturgical, the monastic hood took the place of the biretta. Canons Regular generally do—for instance the canons of the Order of Prémontré wear a white biretta.
Other communities wear hats similar to the fez or the more common Bucharian styled kippah. Rekel coats are worn by Hasidic lay men during weekdays, and by some on the Sabbath. Some Ashkenazi Jewish men wear a frock coat during prayer and other specific occasions. It is commonly worn by Hasidic rabbis and Jewish religious leaders in public.
Usually, secular priests wear either a black cassock or an ordinary men's garb in black or another dark color along with a white clerical collar. White cassocks or clothes may be worn in hot climates. Also, a ferraiolo (a kind of cope) could be worn along with the cassock. Priests also traditionally wore a biretta along with the cassock.
The temple garment is usually identified by Mormon scholars with the sacred "linen breeches" (michnasayim/mikhnesei bahd) and the "coat of linen" (kuttoneth) that ancient Israelite priests were commanded to wear, as referenced in Exodus 28:39-43. [34]
