The park was first created in 1881 as a forest reserve and went on to become New Zealand’s second national park, preceded by Tongariro National Park, in 1900. [ 2 ] [ 3 ] The forest reserve was created within a 6-mile (9.6-kilometre) radius around the cone of the dormant Mount Taranaki volcano .

In 2013, the port purchased most of the site of the decommissioned New Plymouth Power Station. This site is adjacent to the port and provided an additional 18 ha of land. [5] In 2016, the port became the first port in New Zealand to be smoke free. [6] In 2017, the port purchased a new tug boat Kinaki which replaced a 45-year-old vessel Kupe.

Whalers Gate is a suburb of New Plymouth, in the western North Island of New Zealand. It is located to the southwest of the city centre. The area was allocated to several whalers in 1847, and was called "The Whaler's Gate" at least from 1860. [3] The main street, Barrett Road, is named after Dicky Barrett, one of the whalers. [4]

New Plymouth Central had a population of 1,110 at the 2018 New Zealand census, a decrease of 42 people (−3.6%) since the 2013 census, and a decrease of 42 people (−3.6%) since the 2006 census. There were 525 households, comprising 573 males and 534 females, giving a sex ratio of 1.07 males per female.
