A new prison was opened on 11 September 2008 at Hume, called the Alexander Maconochie Centre, named after Alexander Maconochie.The centre is designed as a multi role facility to replace the Belconnen Remand Centre and provide detention facilities so that prisoners who are currently held in New South Wales facilities may be held locally.

Murri Courts are a type of specialist community court for sentencing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Queensland, Australia.The first Murri Court was established in Brisbane in August 2002, with more being established throughout the state over the next 10 years, catering for both adult and young offenders, under the Magistrates and Children's Court networks.
The 300-bed minimum to maximum security prison for females was built by Baulderstone [2] and officially opened on 21 December 2011 by Corrective Services Minister Neil Roberts. [3] The facilities began operation in January 2012. [4] SQCC is the first completed stage of the Southern Queensland Correctional Precinct in Australia.
The prison has a capacity of 264 cells and is divided into two accommodation areas of 122 secure cells and 142 residential cells. The centre is the only reception, assessment and placement centre for female offenders in southern Queensland. The centre accommodates female mainstream and protection prisoners and at times immigration detainees.
