Vladimir Davidovich Ashkenazy (Russian: Влади́мир Дави́дович Ашкена́зи, Vladimir Davidovich Ashkenazi; born 6 July 1937) [1] is a Soviet-born Icelandic pianist, chamber music performer, and conductor. Ashkenazy has collaborated with well-known orchestras and soloists.
Since 2001, Ashkenazy has conducted the ISO annually. In April 2002, he was appointed conductor laureate of the ISO and has held the position since. [74] On 4 My 2011, he conducted the orchestra for the first time at the inaugural concert of Harpa Concert Hall. In January 2020 Ashkenazy announced his retirement from conducting. [75]
